Some weekends don’t need a plan so much as a change of scenery. Canton sits on the Farmington River in northwest Connecticut, close enough to Hartford that it’s a short drivet , and far enough out that the pace drops when you turn off the highway.
The river is the reason the town looks the way it does. In 2019, Congress designated the lower Farmington and Salmon Brook a Wild and Scenic River. 62 miles of protected water running through 10 Connecticut towns, and Canton is one of them. Everything below sits along that corridor.
High Profile of Canton is on Albany Turnpike, open to any adult 21 or older with a valid government-issued ID. The four stops here are all within about six minutes of it.
The trail follows a former rail line, which is why it stays flat and runs so far. It links several towns across the valley, so you can treat it as a 20 minute stroll or as an afternoon on a bike and it works either way.
There is no gate and no posted opening time. The Canton stretch runs about half a mile from the dispensary at 195 Albany Turnpike, which makes it the closest thing on this list to the store.
Practical note: Walkers and cyclists share the surface, so pick your pace before you start rather than halfway along.
Collinsville is a village inside the town of Canton, a little more than two miles from the store. It grew up around the Collins Company works, a 19th century axe factory built on the water and powered by it. The village still has the shape that gave it.
It is a walking destination more than a driving one. Park once on Main Street and the whole center is on foot from there.
Practical note: On Sundays from June through October, the farmers market runs in the downtown from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Roaring Brook Nature Center is at 70 Gracey Rd, about two miles from the store and roughly six minutes by car. You can walk the trails, look through the galleries, and see the animals it keeps.
The hours are the thing to check. It opens 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday. A Saturday morning gives you the longest run at it.
Practical note: The trails are outside the building, so a wet forecast changes what the visit is rather than canceling it.
Canton Historical Museums is at 11 Front St in Collinsville, so it pairs with the walk above without any extra driving. The collection covers Collins Company tools, Canton history, Victorian antiques and clothing, farming equipment, a general store, a post office, and a research library. It is the clearest picture you will get of what the factory meant to this valley.
Check the hours before you drive out. The museum opens on Saturday and Sunday only, 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. It is closed Monday through Friday, so a weekday attempt is a locked door.
Practical note: Tthe 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. window is short. Put it in the middle of the afternoon and build the rest of the day around it.
The museum decides your weekend more than anything else here, because 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday or Sunday is the only window it offers. Everything else flexes around it.
In summer, the town runs a concert series at Mills Pond Park on East Hill Rd, about a mile and a half from the store, on Thursday evenings from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. That is a weeknight rather than a weekend, and worth knowing if your reset starts early.
The farmers market season in Collinsville runs June through October on Sundays. Outside those months, there is no market, which makes a September Sunday the last one of the season.
